How Celebrities Are Wearing Denim Overalls This Summer

Retro denim is back! Overalls seem to have taken the world by storm lately, and we’re not just talking about grade schoolers. This one-time schoolyard staple has taken on an adult twist, and it looks like celebrities are eagerly embracing the trend.

The overalls have undergone some notable changes since they were first worn in 1891. Originally, they were used by the working class as a protection against work-related hazards.

One of the first celebrities to spearhead overalls as a fashion item was Alexa Chung. Her quirky use of this toddler staple back in 2012 inspired the fashion industry.

Classic overalls — also known as dungarees — are predicted to be the big thing this summer. Here are some of the celebrities who have already started wearing overalls and how they styled them.

1. Rumer Willis

Rumer Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, exuded a cool girl vibe in a pair of black dungarees. She made this outfit work by wearing a pair of combat boots and a simple grey shirt. Celebrities have worn boots with dungarees before, but this is the first time we’ve seen combat boots paired with them. The 25-year-old tucked the hem of her overalls in the boots.

2. Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff can practically snag the title “Jeans Queen.” She wears them often enough and well enough to deserve the title. But this look might be one of her best. The 26-year-old wore a pair of grey overalls, but she let the upper bib fall to her waist for a unique look. The actress styled her bottoms with a tied-up white shirt, a twisting headband and a pair of studded flats. We are smitten with her retro styling!

Victoria’s Secret model, Alessandra Ambrosio, opted for short dungarees for a day out with her kid. She styled them with a chunky knitted sweater, a pair of flat sandals, and a Givenchy bag.

4. Kristin Chenoweth

A make-up-free Kristin Chenoweth arrived at LAX a few days ago wearing a pair of ripped overalls. She styled them with glittered high top sneakers, a holey shirt and a beanie.

5. Ashley Tisdale

For Ashley Tisdale, the best way to wear overalls seemed to be by pairing them with a cropped top. We couldn’t agree more! It made the overalls look less constricting. The actress styled her look with a pair of ankle boots and a chain-strapped backpack.

6. Fearne Cotton

Dungarees are almost a uniform for Fearne Cotton because she wears them quite a lot for work. But somehow, she seems to always find new ways to style her overalls. In this look, she gave her light-washed denim dungarees a more feminine flair by pairing them with a collared blouse. How cute is her top’s scalloped collar? She capped off the look with a pair of round sunglasses, a pair of two-tone flats and a shoulder bag. She’s also clutching a knitted sweater – something to top over her attire for when the weather turns chilly.
